MISSION STATEMENT OF JESUITS IN SCIENCE
We, forty-one Jesuits in science, coming from different countries in Asia, Europe, America and Africa, have met in Chennai (India). In spite of the diversity of our origin we have experienced togetherness through our common mission. At the end of the meeting we have written the following statement.
Jesuit in science is a man of God and a man for others. He discovers and reveals the wonders of God’s Creation through his teaching and research. While promoting the positive aspects of science, he looks to find ways to overcome its misuse. As a person guided by the spirit, he is called to work for the development of the world, particularly the less privileged sectors of the society, based on human dignity, faith and justice.
In science, he experiences our world as broken and shares responsibility for it. He feels called to come to the aid of this broken world. His mission is to bear witness to the gospel values through science, in union with lay collaborators and with them to network effectively in building a just and integrated society.
Contemporary situations in the Society of Jesus and in the development of science may propel him to look into the type of Jesuit presence in science in the past and enable him to look for new forms to carry out this presence.
It is, therefore, necessary for the Jesuits who work in the field of science and technology, to find new ways and means to co ordinate and move forward with new approaches.
