This is a reminder about the upcoming Jesuits in Science Conference and Assembly in Madrid, 5-10 September 2007. Further inquiries should be addressed to sophiaiberia@icai.upcomillas.es.
The meeting will comprise two parts:
- from Wednesday 5 September (registration starts at 17:00) till Saturday 8 September (14:00): a public academic Conference organised in conjunction with the Sophia-Iberia in Europe programme, and
- the Jesuits are invited to stay until Monday 10 September (14:00) for a closed Assembly of the J-in-S group (cf. the original proposal).
Academic Conference. A wealth of information on the Sophia-Iberia Conference can be found on its website: website. The “Contact and Participate” page informs about the Conference “Human Evolution: in search of our anthropic roots” 5-8 September 2007. Another page contains the Preliminary Programme of the Conference. Practical information about registration and accommodation is also available (accommodation for Jesuits is arranged in a Jesuit house: see bellow). Please, use this website to register. The full registration fee (payable at the beginning of the Conference in Madrid) is 80 euros. Grants are available to help certain participants (further information
).
The Conference will finish in the evening of Saturday 8 September and the European Jesuits in Science Assembly will take place on Sunday and Monday morning.
The Assembly of EJS. All Jesuits who feel that the Society has a role to play in today’s interaction between science and Christian faith are welcome, whether they are actively pursuing a scientific career or not. The aim of the assembly is to make a step towards the future. Our discussion should focus on
- European Jesuits in Science Statutes (according to the wishes of Fr. Mark Rotsaert, President of the Conference of European Provincials),
- a postulatum on science for the 35th General Congregation (debated by the Jesuits of the Vatican Observatory following the wishes of Fr. Ignacio Echarte, Fr. General’s Delegate for the International Roman Houses)
- the initiatives aimed at accompanying the discernment of personal missions of young Jesuits with a serious background in science (Vatican Observatory, Chair of Science, Technology and Religion in Madrid in collaboration with lay people…),
- proposals for a common project (networking, co-ordination, communication) which could strive for a greater visibility of the apostolic sector both ad extra, and within the Society of Jesus.
