Microscale Chemistry Unit

One member of ISJACHEM is Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico. This university has a centre dedicated to the use of laboratory techniques at the microscale level (using micro-milliliter and milligram quantities). Among the benefits of these techniques are: decrease in quantity of waste dumped into the ecosystem; lessened toxicity and danger to students and teachers; reduced costs of reagents and energy; less breakage of glass materials; a smaller quantity of reagents and products which are wasted; the enhanced simplicity of the experimentation and the ease of the experimental set-up; the increased variety of experiments which can be done on a smaller budget. The majority of laboratory experiences in Chemistry can be substituted using these techniques. Among the students this facilitates higher skill in managing substances and equipment, as well as instilling a culture of saving and caring for the environment.
